Timber floors are more popular than ever simply because of their natural appeal and low maintenance. Whether you are installing new, or restoring old floorboards there are a few things to consider so to keep them in their best condition. We have created this handy guide to answer those questions our customers typically ask us, on how to care for polished timber floors.

How long does it take to sand and polish timber floors?

Generally, 3 – 5 days. Of course, every job is different and the time it takes will vary depending on the size of the floor; its condition and whether it needs any specific repair work.

How long after polishing a floor before I can walk on it?

Depending on coating type, but generally 24hrs. Remember to keep your pets right away during that period!

How long after polishing a floor before I can move the furniture back in?

Your floors can be carefully furnished after 24hrs. Keep in mind that 80% of the curing and hardening process happens in the first 3 days after completion, so make sure that the feet of your furniture are protected with proper felt pads and that furniture is lifted, not dragged into place.

How can I protect my wooden floors from scratches?

Once you have perfectly pristine floors, there are simple things you can do to keep them looking their best for many years. Here’s what we advise for protecting your wooden floors:

Always:

  • Avoid wearing shoes inside.
  • Use entry rugs and mats to trap grit.
  • Appy floor protection to your furniture – felt pads and castor cups.
  • Sweep regularly with an anti-static dry mop.
  • Use a damp mop for those more thorough, weekly cleans and only with water unless advised otherwise.
  • Wipe up spills immediately
  • Use a soft brush head vacuum.
  • Keep pet nails trimmed.

Never:

  • Use steam mops
  • Use silicone sprays or domestics cleaning solutions
  • Wear stilettos, sports, or work boots.

How often should I get my timber floors re-sanded and polished?

It’s always a good idea to have your floors checked every 5 – 10 years. Prevention is the best cure and will ultimately preserve your floors for many years.

How do you repair a damaged timber floor?

When it comes to accidental damage, there is not much that cannot be restored, especially if you get onto it straight away. Always seek professional advice as repair work often requires matching up floorboards and stains etc.

A “Do-It-Yourself” fix up can often end up being very costly! Always check with your insurance company to see what they will cover and then call a professional timber flooring expert.
